HOW TO NOMINATE A CANDIDATE
Students must be nominated by a parent/guardian, teacher, school counselor, or mentor who is at least 21 years of age or older.  The person nominating the student should include a paragraph (no more than 4 - 5 sentences) about why they nominated this student for a particular category. Please limit your nomination to one student per category.  

Please complete, scan, and submit application and supporting documentation via email (danasthomas@mye-dash.com) or to the address listed below, NO LATER than April 21, 2017.  If sending documentation by mail, it should be postmarked no later than April 21, 2017.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be enrolled in 6th - 8th Grade at the time of application
  • Student must receive two letters of recommendation from community leaders (ie. parent, teacher, pastor, youth leader, counselor, principal, etc.). The letter must be signed and include the following information: Name of person recommending the student, name of the student being nominated, the category of excellence the student is being recommended for (see the list below) description of the student’s accomplishments, and the reason for the recommendation
  • Student must write an essay (no more than 250 words) about the topic listed below
  • Student must participate in the Mye-Celebration of Me Recognition Ceremony
  • Students are expected to be respectful of EVERY NOMINEE, ADULT, VOLUNTEER, AND CEREMONY ATTENDEE.  

THERE IS A LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF NOMINEES WE CAN ACCEPT FOR EACH CATEGORY. ONCE THE CAP HAS BEEN REACHED ALL OTHER NOMINATIONS WILL BE RETURNED

Mye-Dash is pleased to announce the launch of the Mye-Celebration of Me (MCM) Recognition Dinner. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of African American (and other minority) middle school aged youth in the Greater Orlando Area.  In support of our mission, which is to empower underrepresented and underserved youth in the Greater Orlando Area, this recognition is designed to celebrate the educational, social, and creative excellence of middle school students who are trailblazers in their community. Award recipients will be announced at the Mye-Celebration of Me Ceremony taking place at 7:30PM on May 20, 2017 (attendance is required to receive award).  For more information and nomination forms please email Dana Thomas (danasthomas@mye-dash.com)

Mye-Education  - For students who excel academically.  The minimum GPA requirement is a 3.2 GPA. The boy and girl with the highest GPA will be granted this award.  For tie breakers we will refer to the numbers of Honors Classes taken and the grades received in those Honors Classes. If a tie breaker is still needed, students will be required to submit an essay (no more than 250 Words) that incorporates the topic:  “Why Their Education Is Essential to their Future Success”


Mye-Leadership - This award is for Mye-Dash students who have demonstrated leadership in school, church or their community. Students are required to submit a minimum of one letter on organizational letter head that includes an explanation of how this student demonstrates leadership and confidence, the leadership role or roles this student has served in, and the number of hours this student has volunteered with the organization. Students will also be required to submit an essay (no more than 250 Words) that details “Why it is important for middle schoolers to demonstrate leadership now.”


Mye-Humanity - This award is for students who have committed their time to volunteer in school, church, or their community. Students must submit a minimum of two letters on organizational letter head that include an explanation of how this student has contributed by volunteering, and the number of hours this student has volunteered with the organization.


Mye-Civic Engagement - Politics - This award is for students who have used their voice to impact and change their community for an underserved or underrepresented class of people.  Students will be required to submit a minimum of one letter from a parent or organization that shows how this student uses their voice to speak  their truth and represent individuals who would otherwise not speak up for themselves. Students will be required to submit an essay (no more than 250 Words) that incorporates the topic:  “Why It is important to Speak ‘Their Truth’ About their experiences”


Mye-History - This award is for students who demonstrate a curiosity for Black History.  Students will be required to submit an essay (no more than 250 words) that includes detailed information about a person (of African decent) who has made a significant contribution to society (global or American). Please include information about their childhood, their community, their life, and how their contribution has changed the lives of all people.


APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, April 21.  All nominations and supporting documentation should be post marked no later than April 21.
